Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Verse 1
1. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the command of God our Savior and Sovereign Jesus Christ[1] our hope,[2]
Chapter 1 Verse 2
2. to Timothy, true son by faith: Grace, mercy, peace from God our[3] Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Chapter 1 Verse 3
3. You recall that I urged you to remain in Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, in order that you should command[4] certain persons to stop teaching a different doctrine
Chapter 1 Verse 4
4. and occupying themselves with myths and endless genealogies,[5] which cause disputes rather than the godly training which is by faith.[6]
Chapter 1 Verse 5
5. Now the goal of that command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith;[7]
Chapter 1 Verse 6
6. some having strayed from these have been turned aside[8] to empty talk,
Chapter 1 Verse 7
7. desiring to be teachers of the law, not understanding either what they say or the things that they affirm.[9]
Chapter 1 Verse 8
8. Now we know that the law is good if one uses it correctly,
Chapter 1 Verse 9
9. knowing that law is not made for a righteous person but for lawless and rebellious ones, for ungodly and sinners, for unholy and profane, for father-smiters and mother-smiters, for murderers,[10]
Chapter 1 Verse 10
10. for fornicators, for sodomites,[11] for kidnappers,[12] for liars, for perjurers, and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine
Chapter 1 Verse 11
11. as defined by the Gospel[13] of the glory[14] of the blessed God, with which I was entrusted.[15]
Chapter 1 Verse 12
12. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who enables me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into a ministry;
Chapter 1 Verse 13
13. I, who was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and arrogant; but I was shown mercy, because being ignorant[16] I did it in unbelief;
Chapter 1 Verse 14
14. the grace of our Lord overflowed, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.[17]
Chapter 1 Verse 15
15. Here is a trustworthy word, worthy of total acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am chief;
Chapter 1 Verse 16
16. precisely for this reason I was shown mercy, that in me, the ‘chief’, Jesus Christ might display all his forbearance, as an example for those who are going to rely on Him into eternal life.[18]
Chapter 1 Verse 17
17. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise,[19] be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
Chapter 1 Verse 18
18. Son Timothy, I am giving you this charge in accordance with the prophecies about you that lead the way,[20] that in them you may wage the good warfare,
Chapter 1 Verse 19
19. holding on to faith and a good conscience[21] (which[22] some having rejected have suffered shipwreck concerning the Faith;
Chapter 1 Verse 20
20. of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander—whom I have handed over to Satan that they may be taught[23] not to blaspheme).
Chapter 2
Chapter 2 Verse 1
1. Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made on behalf of all men[1]
Chapter 2 Verse 2
2. —on behalf of kings and all who are in authority, that we may live a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.[2]
Chapter 2 Verse 3
3. Because this is good and pleasing to our Savior God,
Chapter 2 Verse 4
4. who desires all men to be saved and to come into a real knowledge of Truth.[3]
Chapter 2 Verse 5
5. For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men—a man![4]—Jesus Christ,
Chapter 2 Verse 6
6. who gave Himself as a ransom on behalf of all people (to be testified in its own seasons),[5]
Chapter 2 Verse 7
7. to which ransom I was appointed[6] a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying[7]—a teacher of nations[8] in faith and truth.
Chapter 2 Verse 8
8. So I desire that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument.[9]
Chapter 2 Verse 9
9. Similarly the women also, dressing themselves in appropriate clothing, with modesty and good sense; not with braided hair[10] or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
Chapter 2 Verse 10
10. but with good works, which is appropriate to women who profess godliness.
Chapter 2 Verse 11
11. Let a woman learn in silence, in full subordination.
Chapter 2 Verse 12
12. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.[11]
Chapter 2 Verse 13
13. For Adam was formed first, then Eve.[12]
Chapter 2 Verse 14
14. Also, Adam was not deceived; rather, the woman, being deceived, became a transgressor.[13]
Chapter 2 Verse 15
15. However, she will be saved through the Childbirth[14]—if they[15] continue in faith, love and holiness, with self-control.[16]
Chapter 3
Chapter 3 Verse 1
1. Here is a trustworthy word: if a man aspires to the position of overseer,[1] he desires a good work.
Chapter 3 Verse 2
2. Now then, it is obligatory for the overseer to be above reproach, a one woman man,[2] temperate, sensible, respectable, hospitable, good at teaching,
Chapter 3 Verse 3
3. not a drinker, not a bully, not corrupt [financially],[3] but gentle, peaceful, not greedy;
Chapter 3 Verse 4
4. one who rules his own house well, having children[4] who obey him with due respect
Chapter 3 Verse 5
5. (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how can he take care of God’s congregation?);
Chapter 3 Verse 6
6. not a recent convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same judgment that the devil did.[5]
Chapter 3 Verse 7
7. Also, it is necessary for him to have a good reputation with those who are outside the congregation, so as not to fall into reproach and the devil’s snare.[6]
Chapter 3 Verse 8
8. Similarly, deacons must be respectable, not deceitful, not heavy drinkers,[7] not corrupt [financially];
Chapter 3 Verse 9
9. holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.
Chapter 3 Verse 10
10. But let these also first be tested; then, if they are blameless, let them serve as deacons.
Chapter 3 Verse 11
11. Similarly, women[8] must be respectable, not slanderers, temperate, trustworthy in everything.
Chapter 3 Verse 12
12. Let deacons be one woman men, ruling their children and their own houses well.
Chapter 3 Verse 13
13. For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and considerable confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.[9]
Chapter 3 Verse 14
14. Although I hope to come to you shortly, I am writing these things to you
Chapter 3 Verse 15
15. in case I am delayed, so that you may know how it is necessary to conduct oneself in God’s household, which is the Church of the living God, pillar and foundation of the truth.[10]
Chapter 3 Verse 16
16. Yes, the mystery of our religion is confessedly great: God was manifested in flesh,[11] was vindicated in spirit, was revealed to angels, was proclaimed among nations, was believed in the world, was received up in glory!
Chapter 4
Chapter 4 Verse 1
1. Now the Spirit says explicitly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceiving spirits and to things taught by demons
Chapter 4 Verse 2
2. —through hypocritical liars whose own consciences have been cauterized,[1]
Chapter 4 Verse 3
3. who forbid to marry and to eat foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and really know the truth.
Chapter 4 Verse 4
4. For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
Chapter 4 Verse 5
5. because it is consecrated through the Word of God and prayer.[2]
Chapter 4 Verse 6
6. If you instruct the brothers in these things you will be a good servant of Jesus Christ, brought up in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have faithfully followed.[3]
Chapter 4 Verse 7
7. But reject godless myths and old-wives’ tales; rather, exercise yourself toward godliness.
Chapter 4 Verse 8
8. Now physical exercise has some value,[4] but godliness has value in all things, holding promises[5] for both this present life and the one to come.
Chapter 4 Verse 9
9. Here is a trustworthy word, worthy of total acceptance
Chapter 4 Verse 10
10. (which is also why we labor and suffer reproach):[6] We have set our hope on the living God, who is ‘Savior of all men’,[7] especially of those who believe.[8]
Chapter 4 Verse 11
11. Command and teach these things.
Chapter 4 Verse 12
12. Let no one look down on your youthfulness,[9] but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit,[10] in faith, in purity.
Chapter 4 Verse 13
13. Until I come give attention to public reading [of Scripture], to exhortation, to teaching.
Chapter 4 Verse 14
14. Do not neglect the gift that is in you,[11] which was ‘given’ to you through prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the body of elders.[12]
Chapter 4 Verse 15
15. Cultivate these things; give yourself wholly to them, so that your progress may be evident to all.
Chapter 4 Verse 16
16. Take pains with yourself and the doctrine; persevere in those things,[13] because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who hear you.[14]
Chapter 5
Chapter 5 Verse 1
1. Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers,
Chapter 5 Verse 2
2. older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.
Chapter 5 Verse 3
3. Give financial support to widows who are really ‘widows’.
Chapter 5 Verse 4
4. But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn first to demonstrate piety in their own household by repaying their parents, for this is pleasing[1] to God.
Chapter 5 Verse 5
5. Now she who is really a widow and desolate has set her hope on God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.
Chapter 5 Verse 6
6. But she who indulges in pleasure is dead while she lives.
Chapter 5 Verse 7
7. You should even command these things, so that they may be blameless.
Chapter 5 Verse 8
8. But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.[2]
Chapter 5 Verse 9
9. No widow should be enrolled unless she is at least sixty, a one man wife,
Chapter 5 Verse 10
10. known for good works—she brought up children, she lodged strangers, she washed saints’ feet, she relieved the afflicted, she devoted herself to every good work.[3]
Chapter 5 Verse 11
11. As for younger widows, do not enroll them; because whenever they are controlled by sensual desires rather than by Christ, they want to marry,
Chapter 5 Verse 12
12. coming under judgment because they have broken their first commitment.[4]
Chapter 5 Verse 13
13. Not only that, they learn to be idle, going around from house to house; and not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to.[5]
Chapter 5 Verse 14
14. So I want the younger widows to marry, to bear children, to manage the home, to give the adversary no occasion for caustic comments.
Chapter 5 Verse 15
15. (In fact, some have already turned aside after Satan.)[6]
Chapter 5 Verse 16
16. If any man or[7] woman who is a believer has widows, let them relieve them and not burden the congregation, so that it may relieve those who are widows indeed.[8]
Chapter 5 Verse 17
17. Let the elders who lead well be counted worthy of a double honorarium, especially those who labor in word and teaching.
Chapter 5 Verse 18
18. For the Scripture says: “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out grain,” and “The worker is worthy of his wages.”[9]
Chapter 5 Verse 19
19. Do not entertain an accusation against an elder except on the basis of two or three witnesses.
Chapter 5 Verse 20
20. Those who are sinning rebuke publicly, so that the rest also may be in fear.[10]
Chapter 5 Verse 21
21. I charge you in the presence of God and Sovereign[11] Jesus Christ and the elect angels[12] that you observe these things without prejudgment, doing nothing by partiality.
Chapter 5 Verse 22
22. Do not lay hands [in ordination] hastily on anyone, do not thereby participate in the sins of others.[13] Keep yourself pure.
Chapter 5 Verse 23
23. Stop drinking only water; use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent infirmities.[14]
Chapter 5 Verse 24
24. The sins of some men are obvious, leading the way into judgment,[15] while those of others trail behind.
Chapter 5 Verse 25
25. So also the good works are obvious; even the ones that are not, cannot be hidden.
Chapter 6
Chapter 6 Verse 1
1. As many as are under the yoke of slavery should consider their own owners to be worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and doctrine not be slandered.
Chapter 6 Verse 2
2. Those who have owners who are believers must not disregard them because they are brothers; instead they must serve them even better, because those receiving the good service are believers and beloved.[1] Conclusion to ‘Relationships’ Teach and exhort these things.
Chapter 6 Verse 3
3. If anyone teaches differently and does not consent to sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine that accords with godliness,
Chapter 6 Verse 4
4. he is conceited and understands nothing. Rather he is obsessed with controversies and hair-splitting word battles, from which come envy, strife, slanderings, evil suspicions,
Chapter 6 Verse 5
5. constant wranglings of men with corrupted minds and destitute of the Truth,[2] who suppose that godliness is a means to financial gain.[3] Keep away from such people.[4]
Chapter 6 Verse 6
6. Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
Chapter 6 Verse 7
7. We brought nothing into the world and it is certain that neither can we take anything out.[5]
Chapter 6 Verse 8
8. So having food and clothing we will be content with that.
Chapter 6 Verse 9
9. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful desires, that plunge people into ruin and loss;
Chapter 6 Verse 10
10. because the love of money is a root[6] of all kinds of evil; in their greediness some have been led away from the faith and have impaled themselves on many distresses.[7]
Chapter 6 Verse 11
11. But you, O man of God, flee these things; rather pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.
Chapter 6 Verse 12
12. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life into which you were called[8]—indeed, you confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.[9]
Chapter 6 Verse 13
13. In the presence of the God who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate,[10] I charge you
Chapter 6 Verse 14
14. to keep this commandment without spot, blameless until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,[11]
Chapter 6 Verse 15
15. which He will manifest at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and the Lord of lords;
Chapter 6 Verse 16
16. who alone has immortality, residing in unapproachable light;[12] whom no man has seen or can see; to whom be honor and eternal power. Amen.
Chapter 6 Verse 17
17. Command[13] those who are rich in this present world not to be haughty, nor to rely upon the uncertainty of riches but on the living[14] God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;
Chapter 6 Verse 18
18. they are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous sharers[15]
Chapter 6 Verse 19
19. —storing up for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, so that they may lay hold on the eternal life.
Chapter 6 Verse 20
20. O Timothy, guard the deposit![16] Turn away from the godless, empty chatter and inconsistencies of what is falsely called ‘science’
Chapter 6 Verse 21
21. —by professing it some have erred concerning the Faith.[17] The Grace be with you.Amen.
