Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Verse 1
1. Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus,[1] that is, the faithful in Christ Jesus:[2]
Chapter 1 Verse 2
2. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and Sovereign Jesus Christ.[3]
Chapter 1 Verse 3
3. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,[4] who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms[5] in Christ;[6]
Chapter 1 Verse 4
4. just as He[F][7] chose us in Him[S] before the foundation of the world,[8] that we should be holy and blameless before Him[F], in love,[9]
Chapter 1 Verse 5
5. having predestined us into an adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, into Him[S], according to the good pleasure of His[F] will,
Chapter 1 Verse 6
6. to the praise of the glory of His grace, with which He graced us in the Beloved;
Chapter 1 Verse 7
7. in whom we have the redemption through His[S] blood,[10] the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His[F] grace,
Chapter 1 Verse 8
8. that He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and intelligent design,[11]
Chapter 1 Verse 9
9. having made known to us the ‘secret’ of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Him[S],
Chapter 1 Verse 10
10. with a view to administering the fullness of the times,[12] so as to bring all things together under one head in Christ—those on the heavens[13] and those on the earth—in Him[S],
Chapter 1 Verse 11
11. in whom we were also assigned an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him[F] who works all things according to the decision of His will,
Chapter 1 Verse 12
12. so that we should be to the praise of His glory,[14] we who first trusted in the Christ;
Chapter 1 Verse 13
13. about whom, to be sure, we had heard the true Word[15]—the Gospel of your salvation; by whom, since you also believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
Chapter 1 Verse 14
14. who is the down payment on our inheritance until the release of the possession,[16] to the praise of His glory.[17]
Chapter 1 Verse 15
15. Because of this, having heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints,
Chapter 1 Verse 16
16. I really do not stop giving thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers:
Chapter 1 Verse 17
17. that the God of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,[18] may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation[19] in the real knowledge[20] of Himself,
Chapter 1 Verse 18
18. the eyes of your heart having been enlightened, that you may know[21] 1)what is the hope of His[F] calling,[22] and 2)what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,[23]
Chapter 1 Verse 19
19. and 3)what the exceeding greatness of His power into[24] us who are believing, according to the demonstration of the extent of His might
Chapter 1 Verse 20
20. which He exercised in the Christ when He raised Him[S] from among the dead and seated Him at His[F] right, in the heavenly realms,
Chapter 1 Verse 21
21. far above every ruler and authority and power and dominion[25]—even every name that can be named, not only in this age but also in the next.
Chapter 1 Verse 22
22. In short, He[F] placed everything under His[S] feet, and appointed Him to be Head over everything in the Church,[26]
Chapter 1 Verse 23
23. which is His body, the complement[27] of Him who fills everything in every way.
Chapter 2
Chapter 2 Verse 1
1. He[F] raised you up as well, when you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
Chapter 2 Verse 2
2. in which you once walked, according to the Aeon of this world, the ruler of the domain of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of the disobedience;[1]
Chapter 2 Verse 3
3. among whom all of us also used to conduct ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and of the senses,[2] and were by nature children of wrath,[3] just like the rest.
Chapter 2 Verse 4
4. But God—being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
Chapter 2 Verse 5
5. even when we were dead in our transgressions—made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)
Chapter 2 Verse 6
6. and raised us up together and seated us together in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,[4]
Chapter 2 Verse 7
7. in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, through His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Chapter 2 Verse 8
8. For by grace you have been saved, through the Faith[5]—and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God—
Chapter 2 Verse 9
9. not by works, so that no one may boast.
Chapter 2 Verse 10
10. You see, we are His ‘poem’,[6] created in Christ Jesus for good works,[7] which God prepared in advance in order that we should walk in them.[8]
Chapter 2 Verse 11
11. So then, remember that once you physical Gentiles—called ‘uncircumcision’ by the so-called ‘circumcision’ (that made in flesh with hands)—
Chapter 2 Verse 12
12. that at that time you were apart from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and strangers to the covenants of the promise,[9] having no hope and without God in the world.
Chapter 2 Verse 13
13. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have come to be near through the blood of the Christ.
Chapter 2 Verse 14
14. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one and broken down the barrier of separation—the law with its commandments and ordinances—
Chapter 2 Verse 15
15. having abolished the enmity through His ‘flesh’,[10] so as to mold the two [Jew and Gentile] into one new man in Himself (thus making peace),
Chapter 2 Verse 16
16. and to reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross (by which He killed the enmity).[11]
Chapter 2 Verse 17
17. He came and proclaimed peace to us,[12] being both far and near,
Chapter 2 Verse 18
18. because through Him we both have access to the Father, by one Spirit.[13]
Chapter 2 Verse 19
19. So then, you are no longer strangers and aliens, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household,
Chapter 2 Verse 20
20. built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,[14] Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone;
Chapter 2 Verse 21
21. in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;
Chapter 2 Verse 22
22. in whom you also are being built together to become a habitation of God in spirit.[15]
Chapter 3
Chapter 3 Verse 1
1. For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles—
Chapter 3 Verse 2
2. surely you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God that was given to me for you,
Chapter 3 Verse 3
3. how that by revelation He made known to me the ‘secret’[1] (as I have written briefly already,
Chapter 3 Verse 4
4. with reference to which, when you read,[2] you can understand my insight into Christ’s secret),
Chapter 3 Verse 5
5. which in different generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by Spirit[3] to His holy apostles and prophets:[4]
Chapter 3 Verse 6
6. that the Gentiles are joint-heirs, of the same body, and fellow partakers of His promise in the Christ[5] through the Gospel,
Chapter 3 Verse 7
7. of which I became a servant according to the gift of God’s grace, the gift given to me according to the outworking of His power.
Chapter 3 Verse 8
8. To me, the very least of all saints,[6] was this grace given, to preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
Chapter 3 Verse 9
9. and to enlighten all[7] as to the program[8] of the secret that from the beginning of the ages has been hidden by the God who created all things through Jesus Christ;[9]
Chapter 3 Verse 10
10. to the intent that now, through the Church, the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly realms,[10]
Chapter 3 Verse 11
11. according to the eternal purpose that He accomplished by Christ Jesus our Lord,[11]
Chapter 3 Verse 12
12. in whom we have the boldness and the access with confidence through faith in Him.
Chapter 3 Verse 13
13. Therefore I ask that you not lose heart at my afflictions on your behalf, which is your glory.
Chapter 3 Verse 14
14. For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,[12]
Chapter 3 Verse 15
15. from whom every family in heaven and on earth receives its name,[13]
Chapter 3 Verse 16
16. that He[F] may grant you, according to the riches of His glory: 1)to be strengthened with power by His Spirit in the inner man;
Chapter 3 Verse 17
Chapter 3 Verse 18
18. so that you may be fully able to grasp (with all saints) what is the breadth and length and depth and height;
Chapter 3 Verse 19
19. and 3)to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge—so that you may be fulfilled into all the fullness of God.[14]
Chapter 3 Verse 20
20. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to the power that is working in us,[15]
Chapter 3 Verse 21
21. to Him be the glory in the Church in Christ Jesus, to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.[16]
Chapter 4
Chapter 4 Verse 1
1. So then, as the prisoner in the Lord I urge you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called,
Chapter 4 Verse 2
2. with all humility and courtesy, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
Chapter 4 Verse 3
3. taking pains to keep the unity of the Spirit[1] in the bond of the peace.[2]
Chapter 4 Verse 4
4. There is one body and one Spirit (just as you also were called in one hope of your calling),
Chapter 4 Verse 5
5. one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Chapter 4 Verse 6
6. one God and Father of all,[3] who is over all and through all and in us[4] all.
Chapter 4 Verse 7
7. Now to each one of us the grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift was given.
Chapter 4 Verse 8
8. That is why He says, “When He ascended into the heights He captured the concentration camp, and distributed gifts to men.”[5]
Chapter 4 Verse 9
9. (What does ‘He ascended’ imply if not that He also first descended into the interior regions of the earth?[6]
Chapter 4 Verse 10
10. He who descended is the very one who also ascended far above all the heavens,[7] that He might fill all things.)
Chapter 4 Verse 11
11. Yes, He Himself gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,[8]
Chapter 4 Verse 12
12. for the equipping of the saints into the work of the ministry, so as to build up the body of Christ,
Chapter 4 Verse 13
13. until we all attain into the unity of the faith and of the real knowledge of the Son of God, into a complete man, into the resulting full stature of Christ;[9]
Chapter 4 Verse 14
14. so that we no longer be ‘infants’, tossed about as by waves and carried off by every doctrinal fad, through the underhanded dealings of the people who collect the fee for the error;[10]
Chapter 4 Verse 15
15. rather, speaking the truth in love, let us in all things grow up into Him who is the Head, the Christ;
Chapter 4 Verse 16
16. from whom the whole body, being fitted and knit together by what every joint supplies, as each individual part does its work, promotes its own growth,[11] its own edification, in love.
Chapter 4 Verse 17
17. So then, I affirm and insist on this in the Lord: you must no longer carry on as the rest of the Gentiles do,[12] in the futility of their mind,
Chapter 4 Verse 18
18. having been darkened in their understanding, being alienated [as a continuing condition] from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts,[13]
Chapter 4 Verse 19
19. who, having become dead to hope, have abandoned themselves to depravity, greedily indulging in every kind of vileness.[14]
Chapter 4 Verse 20
20. Now that is not how you ‘learned Christ’—
Chapter 4 Verse 21
21. if indeed you have heard Him and been taught by Him (as the truth is in Jesus):
Chapter 4 Verse 22
22. that you put away, concerning your former way of life, the old man[15] (that keeps on being corrupted by the deceitful desires),
Chapter 4 Verse 23
23. and that you be renewed[16] in the spirit of your mind,
Chapter 4 Verse 24
24. and put on the new man, created in the likeness of God,[17] in true righteousness and holiness.
Chapter 4 Verse 25
25. Therefore, having put away falsehood, ‘Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,’[18] for we are members of one another.
Chapter 4 Verse 26
26. ‘Be angry but do not sin’;[19] do not let the sun set on your angry mood,
Chapter 4 Verse 27
27. nor give an opportunity to the devil.[20]
Chapter 4 Verse 28
28. The one who steals must steal no longer, but rather let him work, doing something good with his hands, that he may have something to share with someone in need.
Chapter 4 Verse 29
29. Let no evil word proceed from your mouth, but only what is good for edification, as needed,[21] that it may impart grace to those who hear.
Chapter 4 Verse 30
30. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,[22] with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Chapter 4 Verse 31
31. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor and slander be removed from you, with all malice.[23]
Chapter 4 Verse 32
32. Rather, be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Chapter 5
Chapter 5 Verse 1
1. Therefore be imitators of God as beloved children,
Chapter 5 Verse 2
2. and walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma.
Chapter 5 Verse 3
3. But, you should not even talk about fornication or any form of moral corruption or insatiableness[1] (as is fitting for saints);
Chapter 5 Verse 4
4. nor any obscenity, nor foolish talk or coarse joking (that do not belong), but rather thanksgiving.
Chapter 5 Verse 5
5. Because you can know this for sure: no fornicator, nor anyone who is morally corrupt or insatiable (actually an idolater),[2] has any inheritance in the Kingdom of the Christ and God.[3]
Chapter 5 Verse 6
6. Let no one deceive you with empty words,[4] for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of the disobedience.[5]
Chapter 5 Verse 7
7. Therefore do not be participants with them
Chapter 5 Verse 8
8. —even though you were once darkness, you are now light in Sovereign. Walk in light Walk as children of light
Chapter 5 Verse 9
9. (for the fruit of the Spirit[6] is in all goodness and righteousness and truth),
Chapter 5 Verse 10
10. approving what is pleasing to the Lord.
Chapter 5 Verse 11
11. Do not associate with the unfruitful works of the darkness, but rather expose/reprove them.[7]
Chapter 5 Verse 12
12. (It is shameful even to speak of those things being done by them in secret.)
Chapter 5 Verse 13
13. Now all things, upon being exposed, are revealed by the light, for whatever reveals is light.
Chapter 5 Verse 14
14. Therefore He says: “Wake up, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and the Christ will shine on you.”[8]
Chapter 5 Verse 15
15. See then that you walk carefully, not as unwise but as wise,
Chapter 5 Verse 16
16. redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Chapter 5 Verse 17
17. That is why you must not be foolish,[9] but understand what the Lord’s will is.
Chapter 5 Verse 18
18. And do not get drunk on wine, which is harmful and wasteful;[10] rather be filled with the Spirit,[11]
Chapter 5 Verse 19
19. speaking to one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord;
Chapter 5 Verse 20
20. always giving thanks to God the Father concerning all things,[12] in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ,
Chapter 5 Verse 21
21. submitting to one another in the fear of God.[13]
Chapter 5 Verse 22
22. Wives, subordinate yourselves[14] to your own husbands, as to the Lord,
Chapter 5 Verse 23
23. because a man is head of his wife as also Christ is Head of the Church—He also is Preserver of the body.
Chapter 5 Verse 24
24. Yes, just as the Church is subject to Christ, so also the wives should be to their own husbands in everything.[15]
Chapter 5 Verse 25
25. Husbands, love your own wives just as Christ also loved the Church and gave Himself up on her behalf,
Chapter 5 Verse 26
26. in order that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of the water: in a word,
Chapter 5 Verse 27
27. that He might present her—the splendid Church—to Himself, not having a blemish or a wrinkle or any such thing, but that she be holy and blameless.
Chapter 5 Verse 28
28. Just so the husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
Chapter 5 Verse 29
29. After all, no one ever hated his own flesh; rather he nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the Church
Chapter 5 Verse 30
30. —for we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.[16]
Chapter 5 Verse 31
31. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[17]
Chapter 5 Verse 32
32. This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the Church.
Chapter 5 Verse 33
33. In any case, each of you individually: let each one love his own wife as himself,[18] while the wife must respect her husband.
Chapter 6
Chapter 6 Verse 1
1. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Chapter 6 Verse 2
2. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—
Chapter 6 Verse 3
3. “that it may go well with you and you may live long on the earth.”[1]
Chapter 6 Verse 4
4. And fathers, do not provoke your children to anger,[2] but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of Sovereign.
Chapter 6 Verse 5
5. Slaves, obey your human masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ;[3]
Chapter 6 Verse 6
6. not only when being watched, to please men, but as slaves of the Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
Chapter 6 Verse 7
7. serving with a good attitude, as to the Lord and not to men,
Chapter 6 Verse 8
8. knowing that whatever good each one does, he will receive the same again from the Lord, whether he is slave or free.[4]
Chapter 6 Verse 9
9. And masters, be the same way towards them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.
Chapter 6 Verse 10
10. Finally, my brothers,[5] be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.
Chapter 6 Verse 11
11. Put on the full armor of God so as to be able to stand firm against the stratagems of the devil.
Chapter 6 Verse 12
12. Because, our wrestling match[6] is not against flesh and blood,[7] but against the principalities, against the authorities, against the world-rulers of the darkness of this age, against the malignant spirits in the heavenly realms.
Chapter 6 Verse 13
13. That is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, to stand firm, with everything in place.
Chapter 6 Verse 14
14. So stand firm, having belted your waist with truth,[8] having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
Chapter 6 Verse 15
15. and having shod your feet with the readiness of the Gospel of the peace;
Chapter 6 Verse 16
16. above all, having taken up the shield of the faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows[9] of the malignant one;
Chapter 6 Verse 17
17. also, grasp the helmet of the salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s Word spoken;[10]
Chapter 6 Verse 18
18. praying at all times in the Spirit, using every prayer and petition, yes being watchful to this end with all perseverance and petition for all the saints
Chapter 6 Verse 19
19. —on my behalf too,[11] that when I open my mouth utterance may be given to me with boldness, to make known the mystery of the Gospel,
Chapter 6 Verse 20
20. for which I am an ambassador in chains; that I may declare it boldly,[12] as I ought to do.
Chapter 6 Verse 21
21. Now that you also may know my affairs, how I am doing, Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything;
Chapter 6 Verse 22
22. whom I have sent to you for this very purpose: that you may know our circumstances and that he may comfort your hearts.
Chapter 6 Verse 23
23. Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and Sovereign Jesus Christ.
Chapter 6 Verse 24
24. The grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.[13] Amen.
